Is It Cheaper to Build a Pool During the Off-Season in Arizona?
6:22

Are you waiting for a winter sale or a holiday discount before you build your pool?

Do pool companies really offer low prices during the off-season? Is it just a marketing tool?

At Shasta, we've built pools in Arizona since 1966. Our pricing doesn't move with the seasons. It's set by manufacturers. We don't decide to just lower prices because the calendar turns November.

This article highlights how pool pricing works. We share what "off-season savings" really mean and whether waiting for a deal is going to cost you more.  So, you can decide when is the right time for you to buy a pool.

Is It Cheaper to Build a Pool in the Off-Season in Arizona?

The honest answer is not really. Pool pricing in Arizona is set by the manufacturers. We don't lower prices because by how slow business gets in November. Also, just because people are swimming in the off-season doesn't mean they aren't buying pools. Often people want their pools built before the summer swim season happens.

Sometimes pool companies do get quieter in the off-season. The leads slow down and the calendar opens up. However, a pool builder's price sheet doesn't move just because fewer people are calling.

Lower Prices Because It Slowed Down

"I never saw Shasta lower prices because it slowed down. If it was a much smaller company, maybe they do, but it's more to their advantage because they just don't have the volume." — Chris Woods, Sales Manager, Shasta Pools

What Actually Sets Pool Pricing in Arizona?

  • Pricing is set by the large manufacturers and typically once a year.

  • Builders get re-negotiated rates at that time.

  • The one exception was COVID, when materials and subs were repricing every other week.

Does Demand Slowing Down in Winter Lower Your Price?

Shasta never gets in a room and says, hey, okay, it's October 1st, let's lower prices and do a promo. That's not how it works. Although, build times can move a little quicker when the schedule's lighter. Not the price.

What Time of Year Is Cheapest to Build a Pool?

There are really only two honest answers. Neither of them have anything to do with time of the year.

The first is whenever it's right for you. Honestly, it's always been when it's right for you. Now it sounds kind of blah and unattractive answer. Basically, pool prices don't change much that even if you got lucky and saved $1,000 later is that worth making a permeant backyard decision over.

The second answer is today. Not because of a sale. Because most of the time prices go up so waiting typically costs more.

Prices Went Up

"I've seen over the years so many people wait and prices went up and then they're like, well, can you do it? Like, no, the prices went up. I mean, you waited hoping the opposite would happen and actually went up, not down." — Chris Woods, Sales Manager, Shasta Pools

It's Right For You

  • A pool is a permanent decision. Once it's built, there's no redo.

What if the other competition said they could build it in X time? You went with them because they said it and they didn't deliver. Now you're stuck with that pool you actually didn't really want. The real question isn't which month is cheapest. It's whether you're ready to make a decision you can't undo.

Do Pool Builders Offer Winter or Holiday Discounts in Arizona?

Most pool builders don't really have winter or holiday sales. If a pool company was offering a significant discount over the competition the market would react to stay competitive.

We've never been a deal type company. We don't mark things up to mark things down. A smaller builder without enough volume might cut prices in winter just to keep crews working. It's just not how Shasta prices a pool.

Why Some Builders Advertise Big Seasonal Discounts

  • Inflate the price first, and the "discount" is just marketing.

Our competitor down the street get us ten thousand dollar discounts in every proposal. Well, how come my price is the same? They got 10,000, I got zero.
The market is too competitive for a real, sustained discount to exist quietly. If five builders actually dropped prices because it's fall, everyone else would have to match it just to stay in business.

When a builder is slashing prices hard and it's real, it's usually a signal they're struggling to stay afloat. This typically isn't a sign of a good deal. Remember how important it is that your pool builder is still going to be here 5 years later when there is a warranty claim.

What Other Benefits Come With Off-Season Pool Building?

Beyond the cost savings, off-season construction comes with other perks:

  • Faster builds. Crews have fewer jobs, so timelines shrink.
  • Better scheduling. It’s easier to coordinate with designers and city inspectors.
  • More flexibility. Want a rare tile? Less chance it’s backordered.

Off-season builds are less stressful - and often more fun - because there’s no rush.

What Are the Downsides of Building a Pool in Fall or Winter?

Okay, let’s be honest. Off-season building isn’t always perfect.

  • Cold weather can slow down concrete curing in rare cases (mainly in Northern Arizona).
  • Some permit offices reduce hours around holidays, which can delay inspections.
  • Final landscaping may be harder to finish in cold or wet conditions.

But for most areas in Phoenix, Tucson, and the Valley, these risks are minimal.

Are There Arizona Pool Builder Specials Worth Waiting For?

Most pool builder specials are not worth the wait. Shasta doesn't run seasonal sales. However, that doesn't mean there's nothing real out there. The best real deals come when we partner with one of our vendors and pass the savings on to you. These are not based on a time of the month and hard to wait for. Some people can get lucky and take advantage if we have a vendor special on a piece of equipment or interior finish.

Win-Win Specials

"What we try to do sometimes is create a win-win where we'll partner with manufacturers or maybe sometimes some subcontractors to try to help discount a certain product. For example, like, Pebble Tech will help participate sometimes with our interiors — Shasta will participate a little bit. Pebble Tech will help us out a little bit so we can try to help pass on some savings or quote, unquote, promotion to the consumer." — Chris Woods, Sales Manager, Shasta Pools

What Kind of Savings Are Real?

Manufacturer or subcontractor partnerships on a specific product.
They show up as a smaller number on a specific line item. There is no vague "thousands off" on the whole project.

How Do I Start Planning for an Off-Season Pool Build?

It’s smart to start planning 2–3 months ahead of your target build date. If you want to break ground in November, start design work by August or September.

Here’s how to get ahead:

  • ✅ Schedule a consultation with your builder early
  • ✅ Finalize design and features before fall
  • ✅ Ask if you can lock in today’s pricing - even if you build in a few months

Planning now = peace of mind + price protection.

What’s the Best Timeline If I Want to Swim by Summer?

Let’s say your goal is to be swimming by Memorial Day. When should you start?

Typical Pool Build Timeline:

Phase

Time Needed

Design + Permitting

4–6 weeks

Excavation to Finish

8–12 weeks

Total Time

~3–4 months

So, if you start in October or November - you’ll be swim-ready by spring.

Fall is actually the best time to build if summer swimming is the goal.
