It’s no secret that pool exercises are a fun way to get fit and torch unwanted calories, but some exercises are more effective than others. We’re going to explore some of today’s most popular swimming pool workouts and find out which ones are the best at blasting calories and getting us back into shape:

Deep Water Aerobics

  • Calories burned: Up to 400 calories/hour

This full-body fitness regime helps individuals burn fat while developing lean muscle mass.  The routine that’s followed in a deep water aerobics class can vary greatly from instructor to instructor, though each one promises to help individuals burn fat while staying in shape.

Aqua Zumba

  • Calories burned: Up to 700 calories/hour

Zumba has taken America by a storm over the past decade, and for a good reason.  This workout, whether on land or in the water, is one serious fat-burning workout that’s also incredibly fun and rewarding.  The water adds extra resistance while also providing individuals with a low-impact environment so you won’t be putting a bunch of extra force on your joints.

Swimming

  • Calories burned: Up to 1000 calories/hour

Whether it’s the breaststroke, backstroke, or completely freeform, the best of the pool exercises for blasting calories and staying fit is swimming.  The faster the swim, the more calories you’ll burn, but even an “easy” swim for 30 to 60 minutes can burn an astounding 500 calories.

Important Calorie Burning Considerations

There’s no question that pool exercises will burn calories, but how many you’ll burn will depend on a variety of factors.  Height, weight, gender, age, current fitness level and even genetics play a huge role in how many calories you can expect to lose.  The best way to stay in shape and feeling great is to try out a number of water activities and stick with the ones that you enjoy.
