Pros and Cons of Having a Saltwater Pool vs. a Chlorinated Pool

No matter the size or shape of your pool, choosing the type of sanitation system that purifies your water can sometimes be confusing. Many people are curious about the benefits of saltwater systems, which produce liquid chlorine, versus the more traditional route of tablet chlorinated water. To make it easier on you, we’ve outlined some of the pros and cons of having a salt pool system versus a tablet chlorinated pool.

When deciding between salt pool water or a tablet chlorinated pool water, the great news is that you can’t make a wrong decision. Both options will provide hours of family fun!

Saltwater Pools

While it might seem like the only difference of saltwater is the water content, a saltwater pool does require a piece of equipment that regulates the water. Because you won’t be adding chlorine to the water manually, a generator is needed in order to convert salt into chlorine. The benefit is that the system produces chlorine for you without you having to physically handle chlorine tablets or go replenish your tablet supply every few months.

Chlorine Pools

With chlorine pools, there is often little doubt in the effectiveness of manually adding chlorine to the pool. Many brands, like Bioguard as one example, add enhancing additives to the tablets that make it easier to maintain a healthy and clear body of water. This means that you can have a high level of confidence in your pool being thoroughly sanitized. Chlorine tablets are most often added to a floating canister or, ideally, into a canister built into the pool that directly flows the chlorine into the pool, right at the water’s edge.
