Shasta Swimming Pool Water Problem Solving Guide

There’s nothing worse than heading out to take a dip and then discovering that your pool may be less than pristine. Is it the pool water chemistry? Is it a mechanical issue? We’ve put together a quick problem solving guide to help you troubleshoot a couple of the most common pool water problems pool owners face, starting with:

Pool Water Is Cloudy

If you have hazy water or can’t easily see a quarter at the bottom of your pool, then your pool water is cloudy. This can be due to a number of reasons:

  • The water may be imbalanced
  • There may be poor circulation and filtration
  • Chloramines may be present or there isn’t enough chlorine in the pool

The Solution:

  • Start by checking your pump and filter to ensure that they’re working properly. If you haven’t been running the pump for 8 to 12 hours a day, do so for 24 hours and see if there’s a difference
  • Check the pool water chemistry to ensure its balanced
  • Shock your pool waters

Pool Water Is Green

Greenish or murky pool water indicates a presence of green algae in the water. This may occur due to:

  • An improper water balance
  • Poor circulation
  • Low sanitizer
  • Poor maintenance

The Solution:

  • The first step for how to clean a green pool is to check the pool water chemistry. Scrub the sides and floor of the pool, and then use an algaecide and shock treatment to clean it out.  Vacuum any debris from your pool
  • Check your system to ensure that it’s running properly
  • Clean out the filter

Filter is Clogging

There are a couple of reasons why your filter may be clogging up or not running as long or as efficiently as it should:

  • The filter may be dirty and the media may need to be cleaned
  • There may be an improper about of filter media

The Solution:

  • Check the filter to ensure that there is enough media and replace if needed.
  • Clean the filter
