How To Measure Your Pool

For a square shaped pool, measure one side.  For a rectangular shaped pool, simply measure the longest and shortest side of the pool.  For a circle, measure the diameter of the pool (i.e. right down the center).

Next is measuring the depth.  Should your pool be all one depth, then you’ll only need to take one measurement.  Should it have a depth that gradually increases, begin by measuring the most shallow end, and then the deep end.

Calculating the Volume

Now you’re ready to begin using the pool volume calculator equations so that you can get the right pool chemistry.  We’ll start with rectangular pools:

• Rectangular: Begin by finding the average depth (i.e. the shallow end is 2 feet, the deepest end is 8 feet).  Add them together, divide by two, and you’ll find the average depth:  (2+8)/2 = 5.  Then multiple the results by the width of the pool.  Let’s say the pool is 10 feet and the length is 40 feet:  5ft x 10ft x 40 ft = 2000 ft.  To convert this number into gallons, simply multiply by 7.8:  2000 x 7.48 = 14 960 gallons

• Round:  If you have a round pool that is all one depth, then you can calculate it as V = πr2h.  So if the pool’s radius is 4.5 feet and the depth is 4 feet, your equation would look like:  π x 4.52  x 4.  Take the 254.46 cubic feet, multiply it by the 7.48, and you’ll find that the pool is 1903 gallons.

• Free Form:  For free form pools, follow the same procedure as in the tip above to find the average depth.  To find the average width, simply add up the different widths, and then divide that number by the amount of widths.  Find the length of the pool, and then multiple the average depth, average width, and length of the pool together.  Multiply by 7.48 and you’ll be able to find its volume in gallons
