There are a variety of reasons why there may be air in pool pumps, from debris in the skimmer to loose fittings or a variety of other reasons. Fortunately this is one pool and spa maintenance task that most pool owners can often take on themselves without needing to call up a Phoenix pool maintenance company. Here is our how to pool maintenance tip for how to clear air from a pool pump:
Start off by turning off the pump, and the take care to close all valves on the suction side of the pump (i.e. vacuum line,s drain lines and skimmers).
If there is an air relief valve on the filter, open it to release any air pressure and slowly open the strainer lid for the pump. If you don’t have an air relief valve, simply open the strainer lid a little to slowly allow the pressure to escape.
Check the strainer basket for any debris and give it a good clean if necessary. Ensure that the basket is still intact and not damaged. Then look at the O-ring or the gasket for the strainer and sure that it’s clean, undamaged, and that it’s able to make a solid seal.
Once everything looks good, replace the basket, fill the strainer with water, and then twist on the strainer lid, ensuring that it has a nice tight seal. You may need to repeat this process several times to completely purge air in pool pump.
Once the pump is on, gradually open one suction side valve. Give the pump anywhere from 30 to 60 seconds to catch its prime and get a fair flow of water. If the water is flowing through the line, then slowly open the next suction side valve. Repeat this process with all other lines.
TIP: If the pump begins to lose its prime, close it quickly or else the pump will retain air in pool pump.
