Drought Prevention Tips for Your Arizona Backyard Landscaping

Arizona’s desert climate means one thing for everyone who wants to try and maintain a lush, green garden: droughts can, do, and will happen, which can negatively impact the appearance of your backyard this summer.  This when combined with the stringent water usage restrictions in many Arizona communities can make keeping a pool landscape looking fresh and fabulous a trying experience, but we have some quick drought prevention tips that will have your landscaping around a pool stay looking great, starting with:

Plan Your Plants Wisely

The best way to keep your garden looking great is to choose from a wide variety of native trees, shrubs, and perennials that have already adapted to our dry climate.  Not only are these plants more likely to survive, but they’ll require far less supplemental watering.  For further tips and advise on drought-resistant plants and vegetables, pay your local nursery a visit.

Make Use Of Mulch

Adding mulch in the spring will go along way in helping conserve any moisture that’s already in the soil, and the mulch will absorb those quick blasts of rain that we receive during our sporadic rainfalls.  It keeps the soil cooler, reduces the stress on plants, and many will also increase the soil’s nutrient and water retention levels. Some of the more popular mulch choices are:

  • Organic mulches
  • Grass clippings
  • Pine straw
  • Cocoa mulch
  • Plastic mulches

Sprinkle 1-2 inches of mulch over already-moistened soil for best results (though if planting around trees and shrubs, be sure to leave a half-foot diameter area around the trunk to prevent any rot-related diseases).

Invest in a Rainbarrel

Rainbarrels may not sound like the most attractive item to add to your pool landscaping, but you’ll be so glad that you did (and many barrels have been crafted to suit the atmosphere of many different backyards).  Your system can collect as much as 80% of any rainfall.
